August 28th, Farmsum. The movement 'Code Rood' organized a civil disobedience action against the NAM oil company collective incorporating Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Exxon Mobil C. As earthquakes become more intense and more frequent in the north of the Netherlands, there is mounting pressure on the government to reduce the amount of gas being extracted there. With this action, they're demanding compensation for damages and the end of the gas extraction in Groningen. The Dutch government has reaped an estimated 250bn euros from the sale of this natural resource. The Groningen Ground Movement is currently considering taking its case to the European Court of Human Rights, on the grounds their basic right to live without fear is being violated.

Besides the Code Rood civil disobedience action, a completely legal demonstration against the gas extraction takes place the same day, organized by local groups.
Hundreds of people gathered in Delfzijl to walk to the NAM location in Farmsum.
The demonstration was warm welcoming by the Code Rood activists in Farmsum.
After the demonstration, the situation escalated into violence.
The rest of the night passed without incident.
